The Experience

"You'll be up and racing in minutes — honestly, it's easier than a bike," Ian says as he hands you the helmet. He's owned Velocity Karts for years and still drives the van himself, picking you up from the CBD or Lyttelton port. The track sits 15 minutes out, backed by farmland and the Port Hills, and it's the only custom-built blokart course in all of Australasia. That detail matters because it means the whole setup — the sails, the karts, the circuit itself — is designed around how the wind actually moves through Christchurch, not borrowed from somewhere else.

Once you arrive, you get fitted with a helmet and gloves, watch a short instructional video, and then Ian or one of his instructors walks you through the circuit. The sail size gets adjusted to match the wind that day, your body size, and how much speed you actually want. That's the thing that makes it work for everyone from a seven-year-old to someone in their eighties — you're not fighting the equipment, you're working with it. Then you've got about 45 minutes of actual landsailing time, racing around the track, comparing lap times with whoever came with you, and figuring out how much throttle you can handle.

The whole blokart landsailing adventure takes around two hours door-to-door, including the van ride both ways. If you want to add the Electric Drift Trikes as a separate activity, budget an extra 30 minutes. The air-conditioned vehicle means the drive back isn't a sweat-soaked slog, and the minimum group size is four people — though the team will combine bookings to make sure you're not paying for empty seats. Wheelchair accessibility is built in, and they work with people who have physical restrictions to make sure the kart actually works for them.
