The Experience

I nearly lost my hat to the wind before we’d even left Russell — that’s how you know you’re really out on the water here in the Bay of Islands. The R. Tucker Thompson looked almost too perfect against the late sun, sails half-unfurled and crew already laughing at my clumsy attempt to step aboard (I blame the dock wobble). Our guide, Pete, handed me a rope with a grin: “You wanna help?” I did, but honestly had no clue what I was doing. Good thing he didn’t seem to mind.

The first few minutes felt like that odd mix of excitement and awkwardness — you know, when you’re not sure if you should just watch or jump in. But then someone passed around a tray of olives and cheese, and suddenly everyone was chatting about where they were from. The sea breeze picked up as we sailed deeper into the inner harbour; it smelled faintly salty and green, like wet wood and distant pines. I tried steering for about thirty seconds (harder than it looks), while a couple from Auckland took photos by the bow.

There was this moment — maybe halfway through — where everything got quiet except for the creak of the rigging and some gulls overhead. It’s strange how peaceful it gets out there, even with people talking nearby. The sky went gold behind Paihia’s hills, and Pete told us stories about old ships that used to anchor here. He poured himself a ginger beer from the bar and said he never gets tired of this view. I get why.
