The Experience

Most people drive to Cape Reinga. You'll fly there first. The plane climbs out of Paihia and banks north over Ninety Mile Beach — a strip of sand so long it takes the whole flight to cross it — then drops low enough that you can see the water change color where two oceans meet. The aircraft lands on a grass strip near the lighthouse, and that's when the scale of it hits: you're at the tip of the North Island, standing between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific, with nothing but horizon in every direction.

After the flight, a guide meets you for the 2.5-hour driving tour around the top end. You'll walk up to the Cape Reinga lighthouse itself — the actual structure is smaller than you'd expect, but the view justifies the walk — and then the tour loops back through the landscape, stopping at Tapotupotu Bay for coffee or tea and a proper look at the silica sand beaches of Parengarenga Harbour. The pace is unhurried. Small groups mean the driver can stop when someone wants a photo or a longer look, and the whole thing stays grounded in the actual geography instead of rushing through a checklist.

Weather is the only real variable. In winter, wet conditions sometimes mean the aircraft can't land at Cape Reinga itself, so you'd fly an extended scenic route over the area instead — still airborne over the meeting point, just not on the ground.
