Summary

Snorkel clear bays hike Roberton Island and cruise past the Hole in the Rock

You’ll cruise between scattered islands, walk up Roberton Island for sweeping lagoon views, slip through the Hole in the Rock if weather allows, and swim or snorkel off quiet beaches—all with stories from a local guide. Expect salty air, laughter over new words, and moments that stick with you long after you’ve left.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We were already halfway across the water when I realized how much I’d missed being out at sea — that salty tang in the air, a bit of spray on my face. Our guide, Matt (he’s local, knows every story about these islands), pointed out a shag drying its wings on a rock and told us how Māori legends are woven into this place. I was still trying to remember which island was which when we pulled up at Roberton Island. The sand squeaked underfoot — weirdly satisfying — and you could smell damp ferns as we started up the trail.

The walk to the lookout wasn’t long but my legs felt it after months at a desk. Worth it though: those twin lagoons below looked unreal, like someone painted them just for us. There was this moment where everyone went quiet except for a tui singing somewhere behind us. I snapped a photo but honestly, it didn’t do justice to that feeling of standing above all those scattered islands. And then Matt tried to teach us some Māori words for birds — Li laughed when I tried to say one (I probably butchered it).

Back on board, we headed out towards Motu Kokako — “the Hole in the Rock.” The swell picked up and there was this collective breath-hold as we slipped through the opening; apparently it’s not always possible if weather’s rough. You could smell salt and diesel mixed together for a second, then just ocean again. Our second island stop was more relaxed — swimming if you wanted (the water was cold but clear), or just lying back listening to gulls argue overhead. Some folks snorkeled; I mostly just watched little fish darting around my toes near shore.

I still think about that view from Roberton sometimes — how small everything felt from up there, in a good way. If you’re even half-considering a Bay of Islands cruise with snorkeling and hiking thrown in, just go. Bring your own lunch or order ahead; either way you’ll want something to eat after all that fresh air.
