Fly side-by-side through untouched forest that has stood for ages

A private ziplining adventure from Auckland that takes you 1200 meters through the canopy of New Zealand's ancient native forest, including six ziplines, swing bridges, a 50-meter cliff walk and an 18-meter abseil. The 12-hour day includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a local guide, café lunch and all safety gear. The defining feature is the 400-meter tandem zipline where two riders fly together. Minimum age is 12. Moderate fitness is required (ability to walk uphill for half a day and climb six flights of stairs unassisted).

The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Auckland hotel, then a drive south through the Bombay Hills toward the Waikato region. You'll pass through Tirau, known for its corrugated iron animal sculptures and antique shops, and stop for coffee and a comfort break at your own expense before reaching the forest. The vehicle is air-conditioned and has WiFi on board. A local English-speaking guide travels with you the entire way.

Once at the canopy site, the 3-hour ziplining experience unfolds across six separate lines totaling 1200 meters. You'll navigate swing bridges suspended between treetops, walk a 50-meter cliff edge high above the valley floor, climb spiral staircases between platforms, and make an 18-meter controlled descent. The centerpiece is the 400-meter tandem zipline, the longest in the experience, where you and your guide (or another participant) fly side-by-side across a fern-clad valley. The forest here has remained largely untouched for centuries. You may see native North Island robins, which you can hand-feed. All safety equipment and harnesses are provided, along with wet-weather gear if needed.

After the canopy work, you'll have a café-style lunch included before the return drive to Auckland. The operator can also arrange drop-off in Rotorua if you're staying in that region. Bring a camera with a small strap that attaches to your harness. Wear closed-toe shoes, layers and sun protection. You'll need moderate fitness: the ability to walk uphill for half a day without stopping, climb six flights of stairs unassisted, and raise both knees to hip height to land safely on platforms.

Is this one for you?Book this as a private tour if you want to zipline with only your own group (family, friends or colleagues) rather than joining strangers on a shared departure. The 12-hour day and moderate fitness requirement suit travelers who are comfortable with half a day of forest walking and climbing. It's not a quick city activity, but a full immersion in the canopy with time to absorb the ancient forest itself.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.

What is the 400m tandem zipline and how does it work?

The 400-meter tandem zipline is the longest line in the experience, and it's the only one where two people fly together side-by-side rather than one at a time. You'll soar across a valley of native ferns with another rider (either your guide or another participant) making it a shared moment rather than a solo flight.

How long does the ziplining part actually take, and what else fills the 12 hours?

The canopy experience itself runs 3 hours and includes all six ziplines, the swing bridges, cliff walk and abseil. The remaining time covers the drive from Auckland (roughly 90 minutes each way), the stop in Tirau, coffee break, and the café lunch after you finish on the lines.

What fitness level do I actually need for this?

You need moderate fitness: the ability to walk uphill for about half a day or do a hill walk without stopping for a break, climb six flights of stairs unassisted, and raise both knees to hip height. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult, and the minimum age is 12. There's no upper age limit, though the operator doesn't recommend it for people with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

Is lunch included, and what about coffee on the way?

Café-style lunch is included after the canopy experience. The coffee stop on the drive south is at your own expense. The vehicle carries complimentary water and refreshments throughout the day.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

Wet-weather gear is provided if needed. Dress in layers and closed-toe shoes, and bring sun protection and a jacket or warm layer suitable for forest conditions.

Can I bring my camera or phone to take photos?

You're welcome to bring a camera, but it must have a small strap that can be attached to your harness so it doesn't fall. Complimentary photos are also provided by the operator, so you'll have images even if you don't bring your own device.
