The experience
The drive starts on the Canterbury Plains, one of the world's most productive agricultural regions, and climbs steadily toward the mountains. After about two and a half hours you reach Arthurs Pass National Park, where the landscape shifts into beech forest and braided rivers carved by ancient glaciers. The pass itself sits just under 1,000 meters, higher than Porters Pass on the approach, and opens onto views of the West Coast rainforests on the far side.
Stops along the way include Castle Hill, an ancient seafloor now risen into giant limestone cliffs and boulders in the middle of the Southern Alps. A gentle walking path winds through the formations: fossils of giant shark teeth have been found in the rocks, and the site was used as a spiritual center by the Waitaha people. The visitor center at Arthurs Pass covers the geology, flora and fauna of the park and has a souvenir shop. A short walk near a small chapel leads to a beech forest stream flowing over a waterfall, and you'll see the stone sign marking the start of the pass, built in the 1860s when gold was discovered on the West Coast and a road was rushed through in a year to connect the two coasts.
Lunch happens in Arthurs Pass village. On the return journey, time permitting, the tour includes a quick stop in Christchurch, where the Botanic Gardens hold large trees from around the world and the Gothic architecture of the Arts Centre and Great Hall are visible if you want to step out. The whole day runs about seven hours from pickup to drop-off.
