The Experience

We stepped onto the old Fox II ketch just as the sun was brushing the tops of the hills around Akaroa Harbour. The deck felt cool under my hands—bit rough, but in a good way, like it had seen a lot. Our skipper, Tony (who everyone seemed to know), gave this short nod before we pushed off. There was no engine rumble—just ropes creaking and that soft slap of water against wood. I kept thinking how weirdly quiet it was compared to other boat tours I’ve done.

About twenty minutes in, someone pointed out a tiny fin slicing through the water—Hector’s dolphins, our guide whispered, like he didn’t want to scare them off. They’re smaller than I’d pictured and move so fast you almost doubt your eyes. At one point I caught a whiff of salt and seaweed when the wind shifted—a sharpness that made me realize how far we’d drifted from town. Tony told us about the volcanic cliffs and how the whole harbour is an ancient crater; he had this way of talking that made geology sound like gossip.

We sailed past sea caves where fur seals lounged like they owned the place (they sort of do). Someone handed around mugs of hot chocolate—nothing fancy, but after that chilly breeze it tasted perfect. I tried to say “albatross” in Māori because Li dared me; Tony just grinned and shook his head. Didn’t see any penguins at first, but then suddenly there they were—little blue ones bobbing near the rocks. It all felt kind of unreal, honestly.

The light changed as we turned back toward Akaroa, gold on the water and everyone quieter than before. Maybe it was just being out there with no engine noise or maybe it was those dolphins—I still think about that part sometimes when things get loud at home.
