The Zaan region processed more cacao than anywhere else on earth, and you'll operate the machines that made it happen.

A 45-minute chocolate-making class in Zaandijk where you operate real cacao crushers, winnowers and grinders to transform beans into bars, taste chocolate like a professional, and craft a treat to take home. The workshop sits near the Zaanse Schans in North Holland's historic cacao-processing heartland. Children are welcome from age 7, and a live guide leads the experience in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and several other languages.

The experience

You'll start by operating authentic cacao-processing equipment: the same machines that turned the Zaan region into the world's largest cacao hub centuries ago. A live guide walks you through each stage: cracking beans, winnowing the nibs, grinding them into paste. The machines are real and hands-on, not a display behind glass. As you work through the process, you'll learn how the region's geography and trade routes made it the center of global chocolate production, and why that heritage still matters to what you're making right now.

After the demonstration, a guided tasting teaches you to evaluate chocolate like a professional: how to spot the complex notes, understand the ingredients, and recognize the flavors that come from different cacao origins. Then you move to the final part: crafting your own chocolate treat. You choose what goes into it, shape it, and either eat it on the spot or wrap it to take home as a keepsake.

The whole experience runs 45 minutes. The workshop is wheelchair accessible, and public transportation options are available nearby if you're traveling without a car. Service animals are welcome, and infants and small children can come along in a pram or stroller.
