The experience
You arrive at either Amsterdam or IJmuiden cruise terminal and step into a private minivan with your guide: no waiting for a group to assemble, no strangers on the route. The driver handles navigation while your guide walks you through Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum where you see historic windmills actually grinding grain and sawing wood, then visit a working clogs workshop and cheese farm to taste local cheese and learn the craft. The pace is yours: linger in the green landscapes and cobbled streets, browse the local shops, or grab lunch at a café without the tour moving on without you.
From there the minivan takes you to Volendam, a fishing village with wooden houses and a working harbor full of colorful boats. You try on traditional Dutch costumes for photos, sample fresh seafood, and wander the waterfront at your own speed. Next is Edam, famous for its cheese market and 15th-century Grote Kerk, where you walk the canals and visit cheese shops to taste and buy wheels of Edam. Marken, an island village with narrow streets and painted wooden houses, closes out the countryside portion. You explore the harbor, the Marken Museum for maritime history, and the scenic dikes before heading back toward the city.
In Amsterdam, you choose your final stop: the Rijksmuseum for Rembrandt and Vermeer, the Anne Frank House for its historical weight, the Van Gogh Museum for the largest collection of his work, the Amsterdam Museum for local history, or a canal cruise to see the city's landmarks from the water. The tour ends there, leaving you free to stay in the city or return to your ship or hotel. WiFi is on board throughout, and the vehicle is wheelchair accessible with specialized infant seats available if you need them.
