The experience

If you have a free afternoon in Pokhara, this tour fills it with access to places most visitors never reach. You start at 9 am with pickup from your hotel, then spend the morning walking through a Tibetan refugee settlement where Mr. Thupten, who grew up in this community, explains how people live day to day. The pace is walking-based and moderate. You move through the village on foot, stopping to observe daily routines and community life as it unfolds.

The monastery visit is where the visual language of Tibetan Buddhism becomes concrete. Mr. Thupten walks you through the meanings of prayer wheels, prayer flags and stupas (the objects and structures that anchor daily spiritual practice), and you see them in their actual setting rather than as photographs. From there you move to a carpet workshop where artisans hand-tie Tibetan carpets, and Mr. Thupten takes you through each step of the process. The showroom next door lets you see the finished designs and colors before you head to lunch.

The afternoon includes a photo gallery documenting Tibetan refugee history in Nepal, and then a meeting with a Tibetan doctor who demonstrates pulse reading (a diagnostic method central to Tibetan medicine) on tour members. Lunch is authentic Tibetan food at a local restaurant, and the tour wraps by 2 pm with return transport to your hotel. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available if you request them when booking.
