The experience

The drive from Swakopmund crosses the Namib Desert, the world's oldest desert, and your guide explains its geological origins and the coastal climate that shaped it. Along the way you stop at stalls where local Damara people sell semi-precious stones (aquamarine, topaz, amethyst, feldspar and others) at prices set by the sellers themselves. The route gives you a sense of the desert's scale before you reach the mountain.

Spitzkoppe itself is a granite outcrop that rises 780 meters above the surrounding desert floor, with a total elevation of 1,728 meters above sea level. Your guide drives around the mountain to show you rock formations like the Rock Pool and Rock Arch, and points out the vegetation that thrives here despite the aridity: Acacia species, the Butter tree, milk bush and Commiphora, along with Cleome and other shrubs. Bird species including Pale-winged Starlings, swallows and weaver birds are visible depending on the season and time of day.

After a midday lunch break with a choice of bottled water, Coca Cola, fruit juices or beer, your guide takes you to see San rock paintings: either during the main tour or at the optional Bushman's Paradise site if you want to spend more time there. The return to Swakopmund follows the same route through the desert, arriving back in the late afternoon.
