The experience

You arrive at a Namibian home and spend the morning learning how to make pap from scratch. The guide walks you through the whole process: how mahangu (pearl millet) is farmed in the desert climate, how it's stored, and how to prepare it into the staple porridge that appears on tables across the country every day. You're not watching a demonstration. You're doing the work yourself, training your whole body in the preparation. Alongside the pap, you'll prepare a braai (Namibian BBQ) with beef, or if you want to try something different, goat head (called "Smilie") or Mopane worms. Vegetarian guests prepare local spinach and Marula fruits instead.

The real point is meeting the Namibians who live there. Once the food is ready, you sit down together to eat lunch and share stories over local beers and traditional drinks. This is how people actually live in Windhoek, not a performance staged for visitors. Children are welcome to join, and the whole experience (from the first grain to the meal at the table) takes three hours. Private transport picks you up and brings you back, so you don't need to arrange your own way there.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and German.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 18).

What exactly is mahangu pap and why is it important in Namibia?

Mahangu pap is a porridge made from pearl millet (mahangu), the staple food Namibians prepare and eat on a daily basis. The class teaches you how it's farmed in the desert climate, stored for the year, and cooked into the finished dish that sits at the center of Namibian meals.

Will I actually cook, or just watch someone else prepare the food?

You cook. The guide teaches you how to make the pap and prepare the braai, and you do the work yourself: training your whole body in the traditional preparation methods rather than observing from the side.

What if I'm vegetarian or want to avoid certain meats?

Vegetarian guests prepare local spinach and Marula fruits instead of the beef or adventurous meat options. The guide adapts the class to what you want to eat, so you still learn the cooking techniques and sit down to a full lunch with the group.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the class?

No. Private transport is included, so the operator picks you up from your hotel or location in Windhoek and brings you back after the class ends.
