The experience
The tour leaves Swakopmund at 10am on day one and heads inland through gravel plains toward the Moon Landscape, a 400-million-year-old area of dolomite rocks and lava dykes that genuinely resembles another planet. A stop at the Lichen Fields introduces desert fauna and flora before the drive continues to Welwitschia Plains, where the guide explains the two-leafed desert plant and the small insects that pollinate it. En route through Namib Naukluft Park, the itinerary watches for Oryx, springbuck and ostriches while discussing Namibia's geological eras: the lava flow period, mountain building and escarpment formation. A light lunch happens in the desert itself. By late afternoon, you reach Solitaire, a tiny service station famous for apple pie, then drive half an hour to Moon Mountain Luxury Tented Camp, where a private pool and clear starry sky await after the heat of the day.
Day two starts before dawn. After an early breakfast, the group heads to Deadvlei for a 2km walk among old thorn trees that died hundreds of years ago. Those wanting the challenge can attempt Big Daddy, one of the world's highest dunes at 380m: water, sunscreen, a hat and good shoes are essential, and the climb is at your own risk. The tour then moves to Sossusvlei itself for photos and rest under massive camelthorn trees, followed by stops at Dune 45 and Elim Dune, where desert wildlife often appears. The day ends at Sesriem Canyon, a deep gorge carved by an old riverbed where farmers once tied six cattle thongs together to reach water. The Afrikaans name Sesriem means exactly that. After a short walk through the canyon, you return to the lodge for a cool swim and dinner overlooking endless desert views.
The final morning brings a 4-hour drive back to Swakopmund via Solitaire, with drop-off at your location. The entire tour runs on air-conditioned vehicles with a knowledgeable guide, and accommodation includes a private bathroom and double beds at Moon Mountain Luxury Tented Camp (or an equivalent lodge if the main camp is fully booked). All meals (dinner, bed, breakfast and lunch en route) are provided.

Is this one for you?The 3-day length lets you cross the Moon Landscape, climb Sossusvlei's highest dunes and explore Sesriem Canyon without rushing. Each site gets time to absorb rather than a quick photo stop. If you have only two days, the shorter version skips the Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Plains. If you want to add Sandwich Harbour for a full dune and coastal experience, ask the operator about extending the tour.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and German.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (6 to 11 years); Infant (1 to 5 years).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the Moon Landscape actually like when you get there?
The Moon Landscape is a 400-million-year-old area of dolomite rocks and lava dykes that genuinely resembles another planet. You'll see gravel plains, eroded formations and endless views, and the guide discusses the geological eras that shaped it: the lava flow period, mountain building and escarpment formation.
How hard is the climb up Big Daddy dune?
Big Daddy stands at 380m, one of the world's highest dunes, and the climb is optional and at your own risk. The tour recommends water, sunscreen, a hat and good walking shoes. Most travelers are exhausted after the earlier 2km walk at Deadvlei, so many skip it.
What exactly is Sesriem Canyon?
Sesriem Canyon is a deep gorge carved by an old riverbed, sometimes 10m deep, occasionally holding a trickle of water. The name comes from Afrikaans and means "six thongs": farmers once tied six cattle thongs together to lower buckets and reach water for livestock. You take a short walk to explore it.
Is the accommodation comfortable after a hot day in the desert?
Moon Mountain Luxury Tented Camp includes a private bathroom, double beds and a private pool where you can cool off after dune walks. Each unit has its own facilities, and the lodge sits high enough to offer spectacular sunsets and views across the desert.
What meals are included, and can you accommodate dietary needs?
Dinner, bed, breakfast and lunch en route are all included. Vegetarian options are available if you advise the operator at the time of booking. Please also mention any other specific dietary requirements.
