The experience
The tour departs Swakopmund at 10am on day one, crossing the gravel plains to the Moon Landscape: a 400-million-year-old rock formation where the silence and endless views make you feel suspended on another planet. From there, the route continues through the Welwitschia Plains to learn about these ancient two-leafed desert plants and the insects that pollinate them. The drive passes through Namib Naukluft Park, where you may spot Oryx, springbuck or ostriches. A light lunch happens under a shade tree in the desert, followed by a stop at Solitaire, a tiny service station famous for its apple pie, before the final half-hour drive to Moon Mountain Luxury Tented Camp.
The camp sits in the heart of the desert with a private pool, and dinner, bed and breakfast are included. The itinerary builds time to absorb the landscape rather than rush through it: sunsets, stargazing and the scale of the dunes are part of the stay. Day two starts before dawn with an early breakfast and a packed lunch. The 2-kilometer walk to Deadvlei takes you past old thorn trees that died centuries ago, their bleached wood stark against the red sand. Big Daddy, one of the world's highest dunes at 380 meters, is optional and climbs at your own risk. The fit may attempt it, but the heat and height demand fitness, water, sunscreen and good shoes. Most visitors walk Dune 45 and stop at Elim Dune for photos and wildlife viewing. Sesriem Canyon, an old riverbed eroded as deep as 10 meters in places, gets a short walk to explore its geology and occasional trickle of water. The Afrikaans name comes from six cattle thongs tied together to reach water when farmers first discovered it in 1908.
The return journey leaves Sesriem at 1pm and stops once more at Solitaire to refuel before the five-hour drive back to Swakopmund, arriving in late afternoon. Air-conditioned vehicles, knowledgeable guides and safe health procedures are standard. Vegetarian meals are available on request at booking.

What's the walk to Deadvlei like, and do I have to climb Big Daddy?
Deadvlei is a 2-kilometer walk on flat sand to view the dead thorn trees. It's easy and takes about an hour. Big Daddy, the 380-meter dune, is optional and climbs at your own risk: most travelers walk the smaller Dune 45 instead, which is less demanding but still requires fitness and heat tolerance.

Moon Mountain Luxury Tented Camp includes dinner, bed and breakfast, a private pool and a bathroom. The camp is designed for comfort after a hot desert day, with spectacular sunsets and stargazing as part of the experience.
How much time do we spend driving versus walking on this tour?
Day one is mostly driving with stops to learn about the Moon Landscape, Welwitschia Plants and geology en route to camp. Day two focuses on the dunes and canyon: you walk at Deadvlei, Dune 45, Elim Dune and Sesriem Canyon, with the return drive to Swakopmund taking about five hours starting at 1pm.
What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?
All meals (lunch en route on day one, dinner, bed and breakfast) are included. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and sturdy walking shoes for the dune walks. If you plan to climb Big Daddy, bring extra water and be prepared for extreme heat and exhaustion.
