The Experience

The day opens in downtown Yangon with a walking tour around Sule Pagoda and the surrounding British colonial buildings: City Hall, the Telegraph Office, High Court, Strand Hotel, General Post Office, and a dozen others that frame the city's 19th-century architecture. Your guide points out the details and history as you move through the streets, then you head to Yangon Central Railway Station to board the circular train.

The circular train is the experience most travelers don't anticipate. It runs in a loop from the main station through various neighborhoods and the town's outskirts, moving slowly enough that you can watch daily life unfold—rural Burmese people going about their day, children, vendors, the rhythm of the place away from the downtown core. After 20 to 30 minutes you disembark in Kyimyintdein and transfer to a trishaw (a three-wheeled side-car taxi) for a ride to Bagayar Banana and Coconut Jetty, where you see how locals work and live along the water.

From there the tour moves to Bogyoke Aung San Market, a sprawling bazaar with clothes, traditional handicrafts, food stalls, and hundreds of gem shops—note that it closes on Mondays and public holidays. Next is Kandawgyi Nature Park, where you stop at the wooden deck overlooking Royal Lake and catch a view of Karaweik Hall, a reproduction of a royal barge, with Shwedagon Pagoda rising in the distance. Then comes the Chaukhtatgyi Reclining Buddha, a 230-foot-long statue in repose, before the tour ends at Shwedagon Pagoda itself. Built more than 2,500 years ago and rising 326 feet above its base, it holds eight hairs of Buddha in a chamber beneath it and stands as the highest symbol of Buddhist devotion in Myanmar. Your guide transfers you back to your hotel or airport afterward.
