The experience
The tour starts in the city center at Sule Pagoda, built 2000 years ago and now sitting like a roundabout in downtown Yangon. From there you walk through the colonial quarter (183 buildings still stand here, maintained by the Yangon Heritage Trust), and pass City Hall, the High Court, the Strand Hotel, the General Post Office, and the oldest surviving Armenian church. The architecture shows what Rangoon looked like when it was the cleanest city in Southeast Asia under British rule, though many buildings now face deterioration and replacement. You photograph as you go, and the walking pace is soft, not rushed.
The route moves through Bogyoke Aung San Market, built in 1927 and formerly known as Scott Market, then into Kandawgyi Nature Park for a walk around the grounds. You'll photograph the park's buildings while walking along Kandawgyi Lake, then head to Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple to see the 65-meter reclining Buddha. After that comes the circular train at Yangon Central Railway Station, a 30-minute ride that lets you sit with locals and watch how they travel through the neighborhoods. The tour ends at Shwedagon Pagoda in the evening, when sunlight hits the golden stupa.
An air-conditioned vehicle with your driver and guide moves you between stops. You get purified drinking water and a towel in the car, and parking fees are covered. The tour runs eight hours total, and you need at least a moderate level of fitness for the walking sections.
