experience

What’s the experience like?

The morning air was cool as we left Ouarzazate behind, heading south through the Anti Atlas mountains. Our driver, Youssef, pointed out the Tizi Ntnifift pass—locals say it’s the lowest crossing in this part of the Atlas. The road wound through rocky hills and suddenly opened up to a sea of green: the first palm groves at Mezguita. We slowed down near Agdez village; you could smell fresh bread baking somewhere close by. Kids waved as we passed tiny roadside stalls selling dates and oranges.

We stopped at Tamnougalt, an old village that felt almost frozen in time. Walking through its narrow lanes, I noticed faded murals on mudbrick walls and heard distant voices echoing from inside homes. Our guide led us to an underground section—cool and dim even at midday—where families once hid during raids. There’s a pottery workshop here too; you can watch men shape clay with bare hands, their nails stained red from the earth. The highlight for me was a peek inside the ancient Coranic library—rows of handwritten manuscripts stacked on wooden shelves, some pages yellowed and curling at the edges.

The drive south got dustier as we reached Tinfou—the first real taste of desert sand. The dunes aren’t huge but they shimmer under the sun like gold dust. Camel drivers waited nearby, chatting in Darija and offering rides (it’s extra, paid directly). I skipped the camel but walked barefoot on warm sand instead—felt oddly calming between my toes. Around noon, we sat down for lunch under a canvas tent; simple tagine with olives and flatbread, nothing fancy but just right after a long ride.
