The experience

Chefchaouen arrives on day one after a drive through the Rif mountains and Tetouan. The blue-washed buildings and 15th-century fortress frame the main square, Place Outa el-Hammam, and an ethnographic museum. You'll spend the night in a riad inside Fez's medina after lunch and the drive south. Day two takes you from Fez through cedar forests and the Atlas mountains to Ifrane, Morocco's ski resort, then south toward the Sahara, passing the Berber village of Midelt before reaching Merzouga. A glass of mint tea, a camel ride, and sand-boarding lead into an evening of Berber music and dancing around a fire at the desert camp.

Day three starts in Rissani, a former caravan trading post, then climbs back into the Atlas toward Tinghir and the Dades Valley, where you'll walk through the Todra Mountain Gorge (a 400-meter rocky canyon lined with palms), and overnight in a guest house. The final day moves west through Ouarzazate (Morocco's film-production hub), the UNESCO-listed Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou where you can explore the fortified clay buildings, and the Telouet kasbah along the old caravan route. The drive crosses the Tizi n Tichka pass at 2,260 meters, Africa's highest road pass, with panoramic views over Berber villages before descending into Marrakech's medina for your final night in a riad.

The route is built around a private vehicle and guide who speak your language, so the pace stays yours and stops can stretch or compress depending on what holds your attention. Breakfast and dinner come at each overnight. Lunch is on you, which gives you flexibility to eat where and what you choose along the way.

Is this one for you?Four days is long enough to cross from the Mediterranean coast through the Atlas mountains and into the Sahara and back, but short enough to fit into a week-long Morocco trip. The fixed itinerary means you move every day and see the major landmarks (Chefchaouen, Fez, the desert, Ait Ben Haddou) without backtracking, though you won't linger in any one place for more than a night.
