The experience

The route leaves Tangier with a quick tour of the medina and beachfront, then heads west to Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves before turning inland toward the Rif mountains. The drive to Chefchaouen takes the afternoon. The town's blue-washed buildings and relaxed medina fill the next morning before you move on to Volubilis, where 2,000-year-old Roman ruins sit on a hillside with views across the plains. Meknes, a UNESCO World Heritage medina with the monumental Bab Elmansour gate and the underground Qara Prison, comes next, followed by the short drive to Fez.

The final full day in Fez is structured around the medina's major sites: the Royal Palace with its seven brass gates, El Mellah (the Jewish Quarter), Jnane Sbil Gardens, Bab Boujloud's blue-tiled entrance, the Medersa Bouanania and Medersa Al-Attarine (Islamic schools), the University of Al Quaraouiyine (founded in 859 AD), the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II, the Nejjarine Museum of wooden crafts, and the Chouara Tannery. Africa's oldest and largest, where leather is dyed and worked by hand. The day ends at the Merenid Tombs for a panoramic view over the old city before returning to your hotel.
