The experience
The drive from Tangier takes you to Asilah's medina, where whitewashed buildings line streets that twist in a winding web. Many walls carry murals painted by artists from around the world. The ramparts themselves were built on the orders of Alfonso V of Portugal in the 15th century and stand as the town's defining landmark. Three main gates (Bab Homar, Bab el Kasbah and Bab el Bahar) lead into the old town. Your guide navigates these passages and explains the history as you walk.
The tour includes a stop at the Portuguese tower in Place Ibn Khaldun, a lively square next to the Grand Mosque where you can rest at a terrace with tea or juice. The medina holds a small cemetery with multicoloured ceramic tombs and the Mausoleum of Sidi Ahmed al-Mansur, the sultan who reclaimed Asilah after the battle of the three kings. The souk brings you face-to-face with Moroccan artisans at work in their stalls and workshops, crafting goods by hand and sharing their knowledge with visitors. A traditional restaurant serves Moroccan dishes. Meals are on your own.
Private transportation means no shared stops or group schedules. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two additional languages, and bottled water, coffee and tea travel with you. The pace stays yours throughout the five to six hours.
