The experience

Your driver picks you up from your Erfoud hotel two hours before sunrise: early enough to reach the high dunes of Erg Chebbi while the light is still changing. The drive takes about an hour, and when you arrive a local guide meets you to lead the walk into the dunes. You walk for an hour going in, moving across the sand toward the highest points, then have free time to stand and watch the sunrise color the orange dunes. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French and can answer questions about how people live in the desert and Berber traditions while you're there.

After the sunrise, you walk back out for another hour across the same dunes to meet your driver, who takes you back to your hotel in Erfoud. The whole outing, pickup to dropoff, runs about four and a half hours. If your group is larger than four people, you'll book two vehicles so everyone travels with space and comfort.
