The Experience

We were already winding up into the Atlas Mountains when I realized how different the air felt—kind of sharp but sweet, like wild herbs crushed underfoot. Our driver, Youssef, pointed out little villages clinging to the hillsides and laughed at my attempt to pronounce “Aït Ben Haddou.” (I still can’t say it right.) The kasbah itself looked almost unreal against the sky—mud brick towers, kids darting through alleys. Later that afternoon, we walked along Skoura Oasis, palms rustling overhead and the smell of earth after last night’s rain. I kept thinking: this is nothing like what I pictured.

The second day was all about movement. We hiked near Todra Gorge—those cliffs make you feel tiny—and then drove past endless palm groves in Tafilalet Oasis. In Erfoud we stopped for tea; honestly, I could’ve stayed people-watching for hours. By sunset we were on camels heading into Erg Chebbi. Riding a camel isn’t exactly graceful (my friend nearly slid off), but there’s something about that slow sway and the way the sand glows orange that just gets under your skin. That night in Merzouga, our guides played music by the fire while stars came out—so many it almost made me dizzy.

I woke up before dawn to watch sunrise from my tent flap—cold air on my face, silence except for someone softly humming nearby. Later we visited Moulay Ali Cherif’s mosque and wandered a local market (if it happens to be open). Old men selling dates nodded as we passed; I tried some straight from a basket and they were sticky-sweet. The drive back toward Agdez was quieter somehow—maybe everyone was tired or just letting it all sink in.

On our last stretch back to Marrakech we stopped at Pacha Glaoui’s kasbah (the guide called it “Morocco’s old Hollywood”) and even peeked into Atlas Film Studios—random fact: parts of Gladiator were filmed there. The road over Tizi n’Tichka pass twisted forever but Youssef stopped for mint tea whenever he sensed us fading. Four days isn’t enough for Morocco’s desert but now I know what sand in your shoes really means.
