The Experience

The drive out of Marrakech takes you through the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, with stops built in so the journey itself becomes part of the day. One stop lands you in a large argan tree field—these trees grow only in Morocco and parts of Latin America—where you can photograph them and learn how the oil is made. At a nearby women's cooperative, you can watch the extraction process and taste the oil, which has uses in both cooking and cosmetics. The stops are paced so you're not rushed, and the driver knows the good spots for photos and rest.

Before you reach Essaouira itself, there's a panoramic viewpoint where the whole city spreads out below: a small town of blue-and-white buildings that looks like it belongs on the Breton coast, not the Moroccan Atlantic. Once you arrive at the port, you're on your own. The medina—the old walled quarter—is yours to wander at whatever pace suits you. The fishing culture, the art galleries, the Jewish Quarter, the seafront and ramparts: you choose what to see and how long to linger. Lunch is wherever you want it to be. The beach is there if you want to walk it. You rejoin the driver at the agreed drop-off point in the afternoon, and the return to Marrakech is the same comfortable ride back.
