experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical when our driver picked us up from the hotel in Marrakech — it’s always a gamble if you’ll end up in a tourist parade or something real. But as we left the city behind and the air started smelling like woodsmoke and wild herbs, my nerves faded. Our guide, Youssef, greeted us with this huge grin outside Tahanaout village and handed us glasses of mint tea that were so sweet they made my teeth ache (in a good way). He told us about his grandmother’s bread recipe while we dipped warm khobz into olive oil. I tried to repeat the Berber greeting he taught me — definitely butchered it. He just laughed and said “close enough.”

The drive through Asni Valley was quieter than I expected; just the occasional donkey braying or kids waving at our minibus. When we reached Imlil Valley for our guided walk, it was cooler — almost chilly under the walnut trees. The path wound past stone houses where women hung laundry that flapped in the wind like little flags. There’s this waterfall tucked behind some rocks that you wouldn’t spot without a local; Youssef pointed out wild thyme growing nearby and let us crush some between our fingers. It smelled sharp and earthy — honestly, it’s one of those small details that sticks with you.

Lunch was up in Aroumd village, sitting on a terrace with a view of Mount Toubkal that looked painted on — except there were goats wandering around below us trying to eat someone’s scarf (not mine, for once). The tagine tasted smoky and rich, maybe because it was cooked over real coals? We lingered longer than planned because nobody wanted to leave that view or the sun on our faces. On the drive back down to Marrakech, everyone got quiet for a bit — not tired exactly, just full in every sense. I still think about that last stretch of mountain road sometimes.
