You’ll ride a hot air balloon over Marrakech at sunrise with hotel pickup included. Sip Moroccan tea at the launch site, float above Atlas Mountain views and Berber villages, then land for a traditional breakfast before heading back—leaving you with that odd mix of excitement and calm only a balloon flight brings.
We got picked up in Marrakech before dawn—still half asleep, honestly—and drove out where the city lights faded into nothing. At the launch site, the air was chilly and smelled faintly of mint tea (they handed us glasses right away, plus these crumbly little cakes I couldn’t pronounce). I remember standing there watching the crew get the balloon ready—big bursts of flame lighting up everyone’s faces for a second at a time. Our pilot, Youssef, joked about his “balloon driver’s license” and it made everyone laugh, even though I was secretly nervous.
Climbing into the basket felt awkward—there’s no elegant way to do it—but once we lifted off, everything just…quieted down. The city shrank behind us and suddenly it was just palm groves, those tiny Berber villages tucked into the landscape, and then the Atlas Mountains turning pink as the sun came up. I kept trying to take photos but none of them really caught what it felt like—cold air on my face, that weird mix of fear and calm. Someone pointed out goats in a field below; they looked like little dots from up there.
The flight lasted maybe 45 minutes (could’ve been an hour? Time gets strange up there), and when we landed there was this big cheer from everyone in our group. We all piled out clumsily—again, no graceful exits here—and sat down together for breakfast. Warm bread, honey, olives, more tea. Youssef handed out flight certificates; mine’s already wrinkled from being stuffed in my bag but I kind of like that. On the drive back to Marrakech I kept thinking about how quiet it had been up there compared to the city noise. Still do sometimes.
