The Experience
The air felt cool that morning as our driver pulled up right outside the riad—no wandering around looking for meeting points. I was still half-awake, but the city was already buzzing. After a short drive, we reached the edge of Marrakech, where rows of quad bikes waited under a dusty sky. Our guide, Youssef, handed out helmets and goggles—he even showed me how to tie my scarf so sand wouldn’t get everywhere (trust me, it helps).
Once we fired up the engines, the real fun began. The quad bikes kicked up little clouds as we zipped through rocky tracks and into wide stretches of palm groves. Sometimes you’d catch a whiff of wild herbs or see goats picking their way through the brush. We stopped for photos more than once—couldn’t resist those views with the Atlas Mountains peeking in the distance. About halfway through, Youssef led us off the main path to a small Berber village. There was this quiet moment when all you could hear were birds and someone’s radio playing softly from inside a mud-brick house.
We sat on woven mats and sipped hot mint tea while chatting with our hosts. The tea was sweet and strong—just what you need after riding through all that dust. I noticed an old teapot warming on charcoal in the corner, which made everything smell kind of smoky and homey. Afterward, we headed back across sandy trails, feeling like we’d seen a side of Marrakech most tourists miss. By the time we were dropped off at our door again, I still had sand in my shoes and a grin I couldn’t shake.
