The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the light hit the Agafay Desert just before sunset — like someone brushed gold across the sand. Our driver picked us up in Marrakech, and it was barely an hour before we were out where you can hear your own footsteps crunching on gravel. There was this quiet, except for a few voices from our group and some laughter from the camel guides. My camel was called Mido, which made me smile for no reason. The saddle felt awkward at first but after a minute you just go with it, swaying along as the dunes rolled out in front of us.

I tried to ask one of the Berber guides about his scarf — he wrapped it around my head with a grin, saying something that sounded like “shesh.” Li laughed when I tried to say it back in Arabic — probably butchered it. The air smelled faintly of mint and dust, maybe from someone making tea nearby. As we rode further, you could see Marrakech fading behind us, just a shimmer on the horizon. Then suddenly we stopped to watch the sky go orange and pink all at once. I didn’t expect to feel so small out there, honestly.

After that, we walked over to a big tent where dinner was waiting. Plates of tagine came out steaming, plus these sweet pastries I’m still thinking about now (I had three). Someone played music by the fire — not loud, just enough that you could hear people clapping along between bites. There was this moment when everyone went quiet for a bit, looking up at all those stars — no city lights anywhere near. It felt like time slowed down right then.

On the way back to Marrakech (they dropped us right at our hotel), I kept smelling smoke from the campfire in my hair. It’s funny what sticks with you after a day trip like this.
