The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Casablanca hotel, airport or cruise port, then a two-hour drive south on the highway to Marrakech. Once there, you walk the medina's main attractions with an official guide who speaks your language (English, Spanish, French, German or one of several others), or you can explore on your own without a guide. The route takes in the Koutoubia Mosque, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and Jemaa el-Fna Square, where snake charmers, musicians and food stalls fill the space from morning onward.

The souks branch off from Jemaa el-Fna into a maze of narrow passages lined with leather goods, textiles, spices and metalwork. Haggling is expected, and the guide can show you how the market works if you book with one. After the guided walk or self-guided exploration, you have free time to eat lunch at a local restaurant, grab mint tea, or shop without the group moving on.

The return journey to Casablanca takes the same highway back, with drop-off at your hotel, the airport, the cruise port or wherever you prefer in the city. The whole day (drive, walking tour, free time and return) runs between 8 and 10 hours.
