Eight and a half hours in the High Atlas: waterfalls, Berber hamlets, a village lunch, and a camel ride back down

A full-day guided hiking and camel-riding tour from Marrakech takes you through Toubkal National Park to the village of Imlil, where you walk past waterfalls and Berber settlements, visit a traditional village, and eat lunch with a local family before an optional camel ride. Hotel pickup and drop-off, transport, a guide in English, French or Arabic, tea and water are included; lunch costs 7€ extra to the family who prepares it.

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Marrakech hotel and a drive through Toubkal National Park to Imlil, a village in the Atlas foothills. From there, a local guide leads you on foot through the High Atlas range, past waterfalls and Berber hamlets scattered across the valleys. The guide shares what daily life looks like in these settlements — how families farm, what the seasons demand, the rhythms that have held for generations. You move between different landscapes and elevations, stopping for tea or coffee along the way.

Around midday you reach a Berber village, where you tour the settlement and then sit down to a traditional lunch prepared by a local family in their home. After eating, you have the option to ride a camel back down the mountainside — a chance to move through the terrain differently and see the valleys from another angle. The camel ride is not mandatory; some travelers prefer to walk or rest. By late afternoon, your guide and driver bring you back to Marrakech.

The hike suits all fitness levels, though it does involve walking uphill for several hours and crossing uneven ground. If you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns, this tour is not a fit. You can bring either a paper or mobile ticket on the day. The group stays small, which means the pace can adjust and the guide can answer questions as you move through each village.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to walk the High Atlas and meet Berber families in their villages on the same day — the 8.5-hour commitment and the mix of hiking with a camel ride make it a full immersion rather than a quick overview. Skip it if spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns make sustained hiking risky for you.
