The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the eucalyptus — that sharp, minty smell as we left the van and met our horses just outside Agadir. Our guide, Youssef, handed me the reins and grinned when I admitted I hadn’t ridden since I was a kid. “No problem,” he said, “the horses know this path better than I do.” We set off slowly, hooves crunching over dry leaves, and it felt weirdly peaceful right away. The sun was already low, throwing long shadows across the Souss Massa river. At one point, Youssef pointed out a cluster of flamingos standing in the shallows — honestly, I almost missed them because I was so focused on not bouncing out of the saddle.
We rode through patches of forest where you could hear nothing but birds and that soft clop-clop sound. There were a few moments when the breeze shifted and you’d catch a whiff of salt from somewhere beyond the dunes. A couple of kids waved at us from a distance; one tried to mimic our guide’s whistle and got it totally wrong (made us all laugh). After about an hour or so — time gets fuzzy when you’re just watching light change on sand — we stopped for tea under a scrappy acacia tree. The glass was hot in my hands and sweet enough to make my teeth ache. Not sure if it’s always like that here or if they just wanted to see my reaction.
I didn’t expect to feel so calm by the end. Maybe it was the rhythm of riding or maybe just being out there with people who actually live in this place. We finished up at a Berber house for dinner — couscous and smoky grilled meat, eaten with our hands while someone’s uncle told stories in Darija (Youssef translated most of it). The ride back to Agadir felt quieter somehow; everyone seemed full and happy in that way you get after doing something simple but good. I still think about that view over the river at sunset sometimes — it sticks with you.
