The experience
Erg Chigaga is not a marked tourist site but a vast expanse of untouched Sahara, and reaching it means leaving paved roads behind. The 4x4 departs Zagora in the morning and drives deep into the desert, stopping for a picnic lunch at Oasis Sacré before arriving at the wild camp in the dunes as the sun sets. You'll watch that first sunset over endless sand, share dinner by the fire, and sleep in a simple tent under millions of stars: the kind of silence that only exists far from crowds.
Day two is spent entirely in Erg Chigaga. You walk the dunes at your own pace, visit nomadic families living in the desert and see how they move through this landscape, then return to camp for another night under the stars. A picnic lunch is served in the desert itself, surrounded by nothing but sand and sky. The third morning brings breakfast at camp, then the 4x4 drive back toward Zagora. On the way, you stop in Tamgroute, a historic village where you can see the green pottery workshops and explore the old Quranic library and underground kasbah before the afternoon drop-off at your hotel.
The 4x4 is the reason this works: it gets you deep into the Sahara quickly and safely, cutting out the long animal treks that standard desert tours rely on. The camp itself is simple (tents, fire, the open sky), but that simplicity is the point. You're not visiting the desert. You're living in it for two nights.

Is this one for you? This tour suits small groups and solo travelers who want to experience the Sahara as a real expedition, not a quick stop. The 3-day length gives you two full nights in the dunes instead of one, so the desert becomes a place you inhabit rather than just visit.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and French.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 17 years).
What is it like to sleep in the wild camp at Erg Chigaga?
The camp sits in the heart of the dunes with simple tents and no walls between you and the desert. You sleep under the open sky, wake to the sunrise over the sand, and spend the evenings around a fire with dinner and conversation. Two nights means you experience the desert at dusk, in darkness, and at dawn.
How much time do you actually spend exploring the dunes?
Day two is a full day in Erg Chigaga dedicated to walking the dunes and visiting nomadic families. You set your own pace across the sand, see how the local communities live, and take a picnic lunch in the desert before returning to camp in the evening.
What happens on the drive back to Zagora?
The return journey on day three includes a stop in Tamgroute, a historic village where you can visit the famous green pottery workshops, see the old Quranic library, and explore the traditional underground kasbah before the 4x4 continues to Zagora for an afternoon drop-off.
Why use a 4x4 instead of camels for this desert tour?
The 4x4 reaches the deep Sahara quickly, safely, and comfortably, and it reduces the long-distance animal use that comes with camel treks in remote desert travel. You still experience the Sahara fully. Just with the speed and comfort to spend more time in the dunes themselves.
