The experience
The route starts in Zagora and heads straight into the Draa Valley: no long transfer from Marrakech. The drive itself is the first half of the experience: you cross endless palm groves, pass mud-brick villages and kasbahs, and watch the landscape shift from oasis to open desert. Tamgroute sits partway through, a working pottery village where you can walk into the underground Koranic library, a centuries-old collection of manuscripts kept in cool stone rooms below ground level. The pottery workshops are still active. The green-glazed pieces are made there and sold in the courtyard above.
By afternoon the 4x4 leaves the valley floor and heads into the rocky desert toward Erg Chigaga. The terrain gets rougher: dunes, stone plateaus, the kind of ground that justifies a four-wheel drive. Keep watch for wild ostriches and gazelles. They do appear on these routes. At sunset you trade the vehicle for a camel and ride into the dunes themselves. The camp sits in the heart of Erg Chigaga, a cluster of Berber tents with rugs, cushions and a fire pit. Dinner is cooked on-site. The night brings traditional music and a sky so full of stars it erases any memory of city light pollution.
Day two starts before dawn so you can watch the sunrise over the dunes with mint tea or coffee in hand. Breakfast follows, then the 4x4 carries you back across the desert and through the Draa Valley to Zagora, arriving by afternoon. The whole route is private (your guide, your vehicle, your pace), and the guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French depending on what you need.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (5 to 12 years); Infant (under 5): free.
What is the Tamgroute Koranic library actually like?
The Koranic library sits underground in Tamgroute village, a cool stone chamber where hundreds of ancient manuscripts are stored and preserved. You walk down into it, and the space itself (the arched ceiling, the quiet, the age of the collection) is the main draw. The village above it is a working pottery center where artisans still make the green-glazed pieces the region is known for.
Will I actually see ostriches and gazelles on this route?
Wild ostriches and gazelles do live in this part of the Sahara and appear on these routes, though sightings are not guaranteed. The 4x4 covers rocky desert and dune terrain where these animals are known to roam, so the chances are real, but bring binoculars and patience.
What is the Berber camp like for sleeping?
The camp is a traditional setup: canvas or fabric tents with rugs, cushions and blankets inside, arranged around a central fire pit. You sleep on the ground on a mattress, not in a bed frame. There is no electricity or running water. The experience is built around that simplicity. A toilet tent and washing area are separate from the sleeping tents.
Is food included, or do I need to bring my own?
Dinner on day one and breakfast on day two are cooked at the camp and included. Lunch on day one is not included, so bring food or arrange it beforehand. Moroccan mint tea is served throughout. Beers and other drinks can be ordered ahead if you want them chilled in the desert.
How long is the drive each day?
Day one is a full day of driving and exploring. You leave Zagora in the morning, stop in Tamgroute for the library and pottery, then continue into the dunes and arrive at camp by sunset. Day two is a shorter return drive. You leave after breakfast and reach Zagora by afternoon.
Do I need any special fitness level or experience to do this tour?
The tour suits all fitness levels. The 4x4 does the heavy work. You ride in it across rough terrain. The camel ride at sunset is short and manageable for most people. If you have mobility concerns or specific needs, mention them when you book so the guide can plan accordingly.
