The experience
Casablanca airport or your hotel is where the tour begins, with a visit to the Hassan II Mosque before heading south to Rabat to see the Hassan Tower and Oudayas Kasbah. The route then climbs into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, where you spend your first night in a traditional riad. The next leg takes you through Volubilis, the Roman ruins, and the pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss, then down to Fez for two nights: one spent exploring the medina, Bou Inania Medersa, and the Karaouine Mosque with a local guide, the other traveling through cedar forests to spot Barbary apes near Ifran and crossing the Tizi-N-Talremt pass into the Ziz Valley.
The Sahara portion begins on day four when you reach Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. You ride a camel into the dunes, watch the sunset over the sand, and spend the night in a luxury camp. The next day you explore Berber villages, the canal system at Hassi Labied, and visit a nomad family for tea and Gnawa music. From there the route heads west through fossil workshops in Erfoud and the Todra Gorges (where you can climb or walk) before arriving at the Dades Valley, where you walk through the Dades Gorges in the morning before driving toward Ouarzazate. The journey crosses Butgrar's piste and the Valley of the Roses, stopping to meet Berber nomads living in caves.
The final stretch moves you from Ouarzazate to Marrakech via the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO site used in films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones, and the Pasha Glaoui Telouet Kasbah high in the mountains. You cross the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, North Africa's highest, to reach Marrakech. There you spend two nights exploring Jemaa El Fna square with its food stalls and storytellers, the Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Medersa, Majorelle Gardens, and the souks with a local guide. On day ten, breakfast and transport back to Casablanca airport close the tour.
