Hiking Vrmac Peninsula: Austro-Hungarian Fort & Kotor Bay Views
An abandoned Austro-Hungarian fortress crowns the Vrmac plateau.
This hiking tour climbs the Vrmac peninsula, a natural ridge between Kotor and Tivat, to the 19th-century fortress ruins at Saint Ilija peak (760m). An English-speaking guide leads you through mostly forested trails to views across both bays. The route adjusts from easy to strenuous depending on your fitness level and interest.

Step-by-step itinerary
Hike Vrmac peninsula and visit fortress
- Start hiking on Vrmac peninsula
- Enjoy panoramic views of Kotor bay
- Visit abandoned Austro-Hungarian fort Vrmac
- Complete hike back to starting point
The experience
The Vrmac peninsula sits as a natural border between two bays, and the hike lets you choose how deep you go into it. Starting points are flexible, so the route can run anywhere from a gentle 3-hour walk covering 9km with 250m of elevation gain, to a full 6-hour trek of 15–20km climbing 760m to the highest point. Most of the trail winds through forest, which means shade for much of the day and views that open up in stages rather than all at once. The air-conditioned vehicle brings you to your starting point and waits for pickup afterward.
The fortress itself (built by the Austro-Hungarians in the late 19th century) sits abandoned on the plateau. It is not a major ruin or a reconstructed site. It is what remains after more than a century of weather and neglect. From the top, the views sweep across Tivat and Kotor bay in all directions. The guide carries bottled water and snacks, and speaks English throughout the day.
What’s included
- Bottled water and snacks throughout the hike.
- an English-speaking hiking guide.

Is this one for you?Pick the easy route (3 hours, 9km) if you want the fortress and the views without a full day of climbing, or the challenging version (6 hours, 15–20km) if you have the fitness for it and want to reach the highest point and cover more of the peninsula. The guide adjusts the starting point to match your choice, so you are not locked into a single difficulty level.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I do this hike if I'm not very fit?
Yes. The easy route (3 hours, 9km, 250m elevation) is designed for anyone with at least moderate fitness. The guide adjusts the starting point and pace to match your level, so you can experience the peninsula and the fortress without overextending yourself.
What is the Austro-Hungarian fortress like when you reach it?
The fortress at Saint Ilija is an abandoned ruin from the late 19th century, so it is not restored or staffed. You walk through and around the remaining structures and get the views from the plateau itself. It marks the highest point of the hike and the moment the landscape opens up on both sides.
How much of the hike is in the sun?
Most of the trail runs through forest, which provides shade for the majority of the walk. Views open up in clearings and at the plateau, but you are not exposed to full sun for the entire route.
What happens if I want to do the harder version but I'm not sure I can finish?
The guide can adjust the route on the day itself. If you start on the challenging 6-hour option and find it is too much, the guide can shorten the distance or turn back early. The flexible starting points mean you are not locked into one path.
