The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel and transport to Xcaret, where a guide meets you and walks you through the park's layout. The 10-hour visit is structured around four main experiences: the underground rivers that cut through limestone caverns, the Mayan archaeological sites scattered across the grounds, the live performances of Mexican music and dance that run throughout the afternoon, and the wildlife habitats where you can watch jaguars, monkeys, and turtles without barriers between you and them. Lunch is included and served at the park.

Swimming in the underground rivers is the centerpiece. These are not pools but actual subterranean waterways that flow through the park. You wade and swim through them, moving deeper into the caverns as the guide explains the geology and the role these rivers played in Mayan life. The water is cool and clear. After that, you move through the archaeological zones at your own pace with the guide available to answer questions about the structures and their history.

The live show happens in the late afternoon and features traditional Mexican music, dance, and acrobatics. It runs while you're still in the park, so you can watch it between other activities or make it your final stop before heading back. The guide stays with your group throughout, translating and pointing out details you might otherwise miss. Pickup and drop-off at your hotel are included, so you don't arrange transport yourself.
