The Experience

The tour starts early to reach Coba before the crowds arrive. Coba sits an hour inland from Tulum, hidden in the jungle, and holds the highest pyramid in the Yucatan. Your guide walks you through the different buildings, explaining their history and what made Coba important in the Mayan world. After Coba, you head to a Mayan village where you spend time with local people and taste tortillas made in a traditional oven—the kind of stop that breaks up the ruins-and-history rhythm with something you can eat and do.

Tulum comes next, the second ruin site, and it's the one that sits right on the coast. A one-hour guided walk covers the main buildings and their stories; then you get 30 minutes on your own to take pictures and explore. The sea view from the ruins is the thing most people come for, and the guide's walk gets you oriented before you wander. Lunch is included at this point in the day—a buffet meal that fuels the rest of the afternoon.

After lunch, you head to the cenote cave, which the guide calls the Xibalba underground world—a sacred place for the Maya. You swim in the cenote's freshwater pool, which the Mayan people considered sacred water. It's the cooling-off moment after hours of walking and learning. The air-conditioned vehicle moves you between all four stops, and bottled water is available throughout the ride. The whole day, from pickup at your hotel to drop-off, takes between 11 and 12 hours depending on your accommodation location.

Is lunch included, and what kind of meal is it?

Yes, lunch is included and served as a buffet. It comes partway through the day, after you visit Tulum and before the cenote swim.
