The Experience

First thing I noticed was the quiet—like the trees around Coba were holding their breath. Our guide, Ana, handed out cold water bottles (needed that) and started telling us about the old stones under our feet. She pointed at Nohoch Mul rising above the green—42 meters up, she said, if you want to climb it. I did. The steps are uneven and my knees complained a bit, but the view from the top… you see jungle for miles, all tangled and alive. There was this breeze up there that smelled a little sweet, almost like wet leaves after rain.

Afterwards we got onto these tricycle things—Ana called them “Mayan limousines”—and zipped back through the forest. There was a moment when a bird called out (no idea what kind) and everyone just stopped talking for a second. Then we drove over to this little community where we met Don Felipe, who showed us how they grow cacao. He let us try grinding it by hand—harder than it looks—and then gave us a taste of chocolate so rich I had to close my eyes for a second. Someone tried to say thank you in Maya; Don Felipe just grinned.

The Mayan ceremony was next—I didn’t expect to feel much but honestly something about the smoke and chanting made me go quiet inside. The shaman sprinkled water on our hands; it felt cool against my skin even though the air was warm and sticky. Then we changed into swimsuits for Mariposa cenote. That first jump into cold blue water shocked me awake in the best way. Sunlight flickered on the surface while kids splashed nearby—so yeah, maybe not exactly peaceful but definitely real.

Tulum ruins were last—perched right above that wild turquoise sea. Ana explained why they built walls here (pirates! I had no idea). We wandered past iguanas sunning themselves on rocks while she told stories about trade routes and old gods. By then I was hungry enough to eat anything, so lunch at the buffet tasted like heaven: beans cooked with epazote, chicken with bright green salsa, tortillas hot off the pan. I still think about that meal sometimes when I’m stuck at my desk back home.
