The experience
The guide meets you at Teotihuacan and walks with you the entire time, starting at the Pyramid of the Moon. You climb to the top, take in the view across the ancient city, then descend to the Plaza de la Luna where the guide explains what you're seeing. From there you move to the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl and the Jaguar Yard, where you can see mural painting still in place on the walls, not a reconstruction, but the actual paint left behind by the people who built this city.
The route follows the Causeway of the Dead toward the Pyramid of the Sun, stopping at a mural of a cougar that shows what the painted surfaces looked like when they were new. At the Pyramid of the Sun itself, one of Teotihuacan's most recognizable monuments, you have time to climb, photograph and absorb the scale of it. The guide covers the astronomy, architecture and history as you move through the site, filling in details that most visitors miss.
The final stop is the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, an ornate building decorated with sculptures of Quetzalcoatl and other deities. The guide walks you through the symbolism carved into the facade, the political and religious role the temple played, and what archaeologists have found inside. You'll have time to study the reliefs, take pictures and understand why this was one of the most important ceremonial centers in the ancient city. Water is included. Bring a hat and comfortable walking shoes.
