The experience
The van picks you up between 8:00 and 8:35 a.m. from your hotel in central Mexico City (the Sheraton Maria Isabel, Fiesta Americana Reforma, Hilton Mexico City Reforma, or Canada Centro Historico), and heads north. Morning traffic can add time, so arriving 15 minutes early helps. On the way, you stop at the House of Tiles to see how three eras of Mexican history sit side by side: pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern architecture in one plaza.
At Teotihuacan, your guide walks you through the archaeological zone with the ticket already paid. You see the Pyramid of the Sun, the Causeway of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Jaguar Mural, each one explained as you go. The site is large, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Before entering the ruins, you visit a craft workshop where artisans show replicas of Teotihuacan weapons and tools from around 300 A.D., and you taste traditional drinks of the region. After the main tour, you get free time to photograph the pyramids on your own.
Lunch happens in an underground cave restaurant that operates only on this tour: a space carved into the earth where you can order from the menu (food is not included in the price). From there, the day moves to the Basilica of Guadalupe, where you visit both the new and old churches, climb Tepeyac Hill where Juan Diego saw the Virgin, and see the original image of the Virgin of Guadalupe from 1531. The tour ends at the Barceló Reforma Hotel, a central point between most hotels and landmarks, around 4:30 p.m.
