The experience

I still laugh thinking about how nervous I was when we pulled up to the balloonport outside Mexico City: my friend Ana kept making jokes about us floating off to Texas if we missed the landing. But there was this weird calm in the air, maybe because it was barely light out and everyone just shuffled around quietly with their coffee and biscuits. The guides were locals from San Juan Teotihuacán, cracking jokes in Spanish and checking the balloons. I remember the smell of propane mixing with that faint sweetness you get before dawn.

The balloon flight over Teotihuacan is honestly nothing like what I’d expected. It’s quiet up there (like, really quiet) except for the occasional blast of fire above your head. It’s hot by then and people are everywhere, but if you find a spot on one of the lower steps of the Pyramid of the Sun you can just sit and watch families picnicking or kids racing each other up and down. On our way back into Mexico City, Ana fell asleep against the window while I scrolled through photos: somehow they never quite catch how big that place feels.
