The Experience

I still laugh thinking about how nervous I was when we pulled up to the balloonport outside Mexico City—my friend Ana kept making jokes about us floating off to Texas if we missed the landing. But there was this weird calm in the air, maybe because it was barely light out and everyone just shuffled around quietly with their coffee and biscuits. The guides were locals from San Juan Teotihuacán, cracking jokes in Spanish and checking the balloons. I remember the smell of propane mixing with that faint sweetness you get before dawn.

The balloon flight over Teotihuacan is honestly nothing like what I’d expected. It’s quiet up there—like, really quiet—except for the occasional blast of fire above your head. The Pyramids of the Sun and Moon look so different from above; you see all these tiny people walking around below, and suddenly you realize how old everything is. Our pilot (I think his name was Rogelio) pointed out where ancient markets used to be. We toasted with some bubbly after landing—plastic cups but it felt fancy anyway.

Breakfast in that cave restaurant (Xibalbá) was probably my favorite part. There’s this cool dampness as you step inside, and the walls are all rough volcanic stone. I ordered chilaquiles verdes because Rogelio said it’s “the real way”—he laughed when I tried to say it right. The food tasted extra good after being up in the cold air. Afterward, we had a quick stop at a workshop for obsidian and maguey—honestly, I didn’t expect to like that but ended up buying a tiny jaguar carved from black stone.

You get about an hour to wander Teotihuacan on your own after breakfast (just remember to bring cash for the entrance ticket—210 pesos). It’s hot by then and people are everywhere, but if you find a spot on one of the lower steps of the Pyramid of the Sun you can just sit and watch families picnicking or kids racing each other up and down. On our way back into Mexico City, Ana fell asleep against the window while I scrolled through photos—somehow they never quite catch how big that place feels.
