The Experience
I’ll be honest, waking up before 4 a.m. in Mexico City felt like a mistake at first. But by the time our van rolled out toward Teotihuacan, I was wide awake — partly nerves, partly excitement. Our guide, Marisol, handed out coffee and biscuits while joking about “balloon hair” (which is real, by the way). When we reached the launch site, the sky was just barely pink and you could smell damp grass everywhere. The balloon crew moved so quickly — ropes, burners hissing — it all felt a bit surreal until suddenly we were floating up. I didn’t expect how quiet it would be up there. Just the occasional whoosh of fire and this slow drift over the pyramids. The Pyramid of the Sun looked almost gentle from above.
After landing (and yes, there’s a little bump), we did a toast with sparkling wine — not fancy but somehow perfect for that moment. They handed us flight certificates too; mine’s already wrinkled from my backpack. Breakfast was next: they drove us to this restaurant actually inside a cave near Teotihuacan. It smelled like earth and coffee mixed together. I went for chilaquiles with eggs (the green sauce is spicy, just a warning). There were vegan options too — Marta at our table had some kind of veggie omelette she said was great. The light in there was weirdly beautiful; I kept looking up at the rock ceiling instead of my food half the time.
Marisol took us after to meet local artisans who showed how they carve obsidian — their hands were so steady, I tried it for two seconds and nearly dropped the tool. We tasted pulque and mezcal (I preferred the pulque but don’t tell Marisol). Walking into the actual archaeological zone felt different after seeing it from above; everything seemed bigger somehow. Our guide walked us past vendors selling jaguar whistles and explained why people used to climb all those steps on the Pyramid of the Moon (not allowed now). By then it was getting hot, dust sticking to my shoes, but I didn’t really mind.
The drive back to Mexico City was mostly quiet — everyone half asleep or scrolling through photos. I still think about that view from above Teotihuacan when things get noisy here in CDMX. If you’re even slightly curious about hot air balloons or ancient places or what breakfast tastes like underground… well, you’ll probably remember this day too.
