The experience
Loreto has drawn anglers worldwide for one reason: the captains are locals who learned the best fishing spots from their parents and relatives. You meet at 6am at the Blue Whale statue, handle your fishing license at the office, then walk to the Loreto marina where the captain loads bait and takes the boat to the grounds he knows work. The boat holds more than three people, but only three rods fish at once, so you and your group take turns or fish together depending on how many are aboard.
What you're after depends on the season. Winter brings yellowfin mackerel, sea bass and snapper. Summer opens up roosterfish, dorado (mahi mahi), striped marlin and sailfish: species that fight hard enough to earn their reputation. Between casts, you'll spot dolphins, jumping manta rays and whales moving through the bay. The six hours on the water include lunch, beers and bottled water. Ice keeps everything cold. If you land fish you want to keep, the captain can take it to a place where it gets cleaned and vacuum-packed so you can take it home or to your hotel.
The boat is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all fitness levels. A live guide in English or Spanish is with you the whole time. You'll wear a bracelet for Loreto Bay National Park, included with the booking.
