Land sailfish, marlin and tuna just miles off the Costa Maya reef

A 3-hour private sport fishing charter in Costa Maya departs from Mahahual beach and trolls the reef for sailfish, marlin, tuna, dorado, wahoo and barracuda. Your captain and deckhand handle the boat while you cast and reel. If you're new to fishing, they'll teach you how to work the rods and read the water. Rods, lures, water and soft drinks come with the booking.

The experience

Meet your captain and deckhand on Calle Cherna at the beach taxi stand (El Campo) in Mahahual, then board your private boat for the short cruise out to the reef. The trolling grounds sit just a few miles off the coast, so you're fishing within an hour of stepping aboard. If you've never held a fishing rod before, the captain or deckhand will walk you through the technique: how to cast, how to feel for a bite, how to set the hook when something hits. Experienced anglers can work the lines independently while the crew positions the boat and watches for signs of fish.

The reef off Costa Maya holds sailfish, white and blue marlin, wahoo, tuna, dorado, coronado, barracuda, black grouper and snapper. What you catch depends on the season, the water conditions and how the fish are feeding that day. The captain knows the best spots to troll and will adjust course based on what's working. Bring seasickness medication if rough water bothers you (the Mexican Caribbean can have waves, sometimes small, sometimes not), and avoid alcohol the night before. The boat carries water and soft drinks to keep you hydrated during the three hours on the water.

The charter ends back at the beach in Mahahual, leaving your afternoon free to explore the town or return to your resort. A fishing permit per person is not included in the booking and must be arranged separately. Your captain can advise on how to obtain one.

Is this one for you?The 3-hour window leaves your morning or late afternoon free, so it fits easily between other plans. A good option if you have a port day in Mahahual or a half-day to spare from your resort schedule. The private boat means you're not sharing deck space or waiting for other anglers to finish their casts.
