Three hours trolling and spin casting for pelagic fish in the open Caribbean

Costa Maya sport fishing is a three-hour boat activity departing from Nacional Beach Club near La Fortuna, where you troll and spin cast for tuna, bonito, mahi mahi, wahoo and Spanish mackerel in waters two to three kilometers offshore. The boat is equipped with top-of-the-line tackle for conventional, jigging and fly fishing. A live guide in English or Spanish reads the water and positions you where frigate birds signal bait boils. All gear and bottled water are included.

The experience

The boat La Fortuna leaves from Nacional Beach Club and heads straight out through the reef break to the fishing grounds. You'll troll two to three kilometers from the coast, where the Mesoamerican reef system holds both resident and pelagic species. The guide watches for frigate birds diving into bait boils (a sign that tuna, bonito and other game fish are feeding at the surface), and positions the boat so you can cast plugs into the action. If the bite slows, you move to troll for mahi mahi, wahoo and Spanish mackerel in deeper water.

You choose your method: conventional trolling from the rod holders, spin casting into active bait, jigging with specialized gear if you want to work the bottom, or fly fishing if you're comfortable with a fly rod. The boat carries all the tackle you need, and the guide knows the locations where each species tends to congregate. Bottled water is on board for the three-hour outing.

What’s included

  • All fishing tackle for conventional, jigging and fly fishing methods.
  • bottled water.
  • live guide in English or Spanish.

Trolling and spin casting are active methods that keep you engaged the whole three hours, not a passive ride-along.
