The experience
The boat holds fewer than six people, which means you're not crammed with crowds at Akumal Bay. Your certified guide meets you at pickup and takes you straight to the water where the turtles live. You'll see them alongside colorful fish and rays. The bay is one of the closest snorkeling spots to Tulum, and the semiprivate setup is what makes it feel like you've found your own corner of it. Before heading to the cenote, you'll have access to lockers and showers at a private area on shore.
After Akumal, the guide drives you to the cenote: a freshwater underground river fed by limestone springs. The water is clear enough to see straight to the bottom, and the rock formations rise around you like the inside of a cathedral. Your guide explains what you're looking at: the geology, the way the Mayan people understood these places, why the water stays so cold and pure. You swim and float in water that feels nothing like the ocean.
Lunch is authentic Mexican food (flautas, rice, beans and fresh lemonade) served at the cenote location. On the drive back, you'll have cereal, fruit and water. The whole experience runs about four and a half hours from pickup to drop-off. Snorkeling gear is included, along with the air-conditioned vehicle and parking.

What's the difference between Akumal Bay and the cenote on this snorkeling tour?
