Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Tulum, Lagoon, and Cenote
- Admire Tulum ruins from ocean
- Snorkel at Mayan Coral Reef
- Discover Kaan Luum Lagoon colors
- Visit cenote and have lunch
The experience
The day starts with a pickup from your hotel and a drive to Kaan Luum Lagoon, where the water shifts between shades of blue and green. You'll snorkel in the lagoon's clear waters, then move to a cenote, a freshwater sinkhole surrounded by jungle, to cool off and explore a different ecosystem. After lunch of authentic Mexican flautas, rice and beans, the boat heads out to the Mayan Coral Reef, where you'll see tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine life. The Tulum Ruins sit on the cliffs above the reef, visible from the water the way Spanish conquistadors saw them 500 years ago.
An English-speaking guide leads the group through all three sites. The snorkeling itself is straightforward. You're in the water with a mask and fins, moving at a pace the guide sets. The cenote is the quietest stop. The reef is where the most sea life concentrates. Bottled water travels with you on the van, and the lunch break gives you time to rest between snorkeling sessions. The whole outing runs about 7 hours from pickup to drop-off.
