The tour picks you up at your San Miguel de Allende hotel and heads to Dolores Hidalgo, a town that holds the weight of history—the Cathedral there is where Miguel Hidalgo delivered the cry for independence that sparked the revolution. Walking through the streets, you pass museums and monuments that lay out the narrative of Mexican independence, and the town is also known for Talavera pottery and ceramics, a craft tradition that still carries prestige today.

From Dolores Hidalgo, the route continues to Atotonilco, a small town of fewer than 600 people about 14 kilometers away. The draw here is the Sanctuary of God and the Country, a baroque temple whose construction began in 1740 under the priest Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro. The exterior gives no hint of what is inside: the walls and ceilings of the main nave and seven adjoining chapels are covered entirely in pictorial art, painted by Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre, José María Barajas and Juan Rodríguez Juárez. There is not a single free space—which is why some call it the Mexican Sistine Chapel. The sanctuary draws thousands of pilgrims each year, but also art lovers who come specifically to see the colonial paintings up close.
