The Experience

The instructor meets you at the break point near Punta Mita and doesn't waste time with theory. Warm-up exercises on the sand come first—stretching, paddling motions, the feel of the board under your hands—and then you're in the shallows while he watches your stance, your timing, the angle of your shoulders. He corrects small things: shift your weight back, pop up faster, keep your eyes on the shore. It's repetitive and it works. Most people catch a wave that actually rides by the end of the first hour.

Because it's a private surf lesson, you're not locked into a schedule the way group tours are. If you want to stay in the water for three hours, you stay. If you've had enough and want to sit on the beach with a drink, that's fine too. Some people use the afternoon to drive north to Sayulita, a small Mexican surf town with narrow streets, colorful shops, and restaurants where you can eat fresh ceviche or tacos while watching the ocean. The driver takes you there and back, so you're not figuring out transport or timing yourself against a bus schedule.

Pickup happens from a designated meeting point—your hotel, an Airbnb, wherever you're staying in Puerto Vallarta—and the driver brings you back the same way. If you'd rather meet at the shop directly and save money, you can take an Uber there instead. The whole day is built around what you want to do, not around fitting you into someone else's itinerary. You need at least one other person in your group to book, but beyond that, the pace and the stops are yours.
