Private Surfing Lesson Puerto Vallarta: Catch Waves All Levels

A private surfing lesson in Puerto Vallarta with local instructor Joaquin covers 4.5 hours on the north shore's beginner-friendly breaks. You get 10 to 15 minutes of instruction on technique and safety, then two hours in the water catching waves at your own pace. The lesson includes surfboards, equipment, bottled water and a snack. Joaquin drives you back to your accommodation when you're done. He teaches in English, Spanish or Italian and welcomes children from age 7.

The experience

The lesson starts with Joaquin meeting you at the beach and walking through the basics: how to pop up on the board, how to position yourself, what to watch for in the water. He covers safety first, then you're in. The waves on the north shore break long and smooth, which means even if you've never surfed before, you'll catch plenty of them. Joaquin has been teaching for more than 15 years and has surfed everywhere from Indonesia to Morocco to Australia, so he reads the conditions and picks the break that matches your level that day.

Two hours in the water is the core of it. You paddle, you fall, you stand up, you ride. Joaquin stays in the water with you, calling out what to adjust and when to paddle for the next set. The rush of it is the whole point. After you're done, you can stay on the beach and recover, or head back whenever you're ready. Joaquin drives you back to wherever you're staying.

The package includes the board and all the gear, bottled water to drink between sets, and a snack. He also brings a GoPro if you want footage of yourself riding.
