The Experience

You push off from the beach after a few minutes of instruction on the sand, paddle in hand, the kayak already floating beneath you. The instructor walks through the basics — how to hold the paddle, how to angle it, what to do if the water gets choppy — and then you're in. The water is warm and clear, and El Morro Islet rises ahead, a dark rocky mass that looks smaller from the shore than it does when you're actually paddling toward it. If the waves cooperate, you'll paddle around the base of it, feeling the scale of the thing grow as you get closer. The whole paddle out takes maybe twenty or thirty minutes depending on conditions.

Once you reach the platform at the base, you anchor the kayak and wade into the water to climb. This is where the cave system opens up — you'll move through the tunnel that cuts through the rock itself, ducking under the low sections, your eyes adjusting to the dimmer light inside. The cave isn't vast, but it's intimate and strange, and the sound of water echoes differently in there. After you come back out, the real climb starts. The trail up to the upper platform is steep and rocky, and it takes some effort, but the view from the top is the whole point. From up there you can see the entire bay spread out — the coastline, the water, sometimes dolphins or whales moving through it if you're lucky. You stand there for a while, catching your breath, taking it in.

The whole experience is built around the fact that you don't need to know how to swim or have any kayaking experience at all. The instructors are trained to keep you confident and safe in the water, and the flotation vest stays on the whole time. The physical demand is moderate — you're paddling, climbing, moving around — but it's not extreme. Most people who can walk and have decent cardiovascular fitness can do this. The tour takes a few hours total, and you're back on the beach by early afternoon.
